How To Prevent Age-Spots?


There are several medications, treatments and even home remedies to get rid of age spots. But as its said that prevention is better than cure, preventing the age spots from forming would be your safest bet to good skin. It will also save you a lot of money and hassle involved in getting rid of age spots. Here are some of the things that you can follow to prevent age spots.

1) Limit your exposure to sun

Sun’s UV rays trigger the production of melanin. Melanin is pigment which gives skin its natural color. That is how our skin gets tanned (darker) when we are out in
sun. But when excess melanin is produced, it tends to clump up forming dark brown, black or grey spots. Hence avoiding too much sun exposure can help prevent age spots from forming. Sunrays are strongest during mid-day, hence avoiding going out during that time can help. If you have to go out in sun you can cover yourself up with full sleeved clothing, wear large brimmed hats and big dark glasses.

2) Use a good sunscreen

Applying a very good sunscreen to protect the from the harmful rays of sun is very effective. Always use a suncreen with SPF 15 and above. If you are going to be out longer, use a sunscreen with SPF 50.

3) Eat a healthy diet

Just as healthy diet is important for overall health, it is necessary for a healthy skin. Having a diet which provides all the necessary nutrition can help to prevent age spots. Have a balanced diet which includes more natural foods and avoids oily, junk and processed foods. Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables. These have antioxidants which protect the skin and keep it young and supple. Also including foods high in iron is important to slow the ageing of skin. You can also take multivitamins or other supplements if you think you are missing something in your diet.

4) Exercise

Regularly exercise is important for good health and also gives great skin. Doing 30 minutes of cardio everyday would keep your heart healthy and improve the blood circulation, fighting illness and aging and giving your skin a beautiful glow.

5) Examine your habits

Certain products accelerate the formation of age spots if they are used on skin before sun exposure. Bergamot oil or musk are two such products which if used on skin before going in sun can cause more harm to the skin. Since these products are very commonly used in creams, perfumes and other personal care products, you should be careful in choosing what you use, especially if you are going to spend lot of time in sun.

Also certain foods like limes, figs, parsley etc contain a compound called psoralen, which makes skin more sensitive to burning, and hence may lead to the formation of age-spots.
