What are mouth ulcers?
Mouth ulcers are painful sores which develop in the soft and sensitive flesh areas inside the mouth.

Mouth ulcers can not only appear in the roof of the mouth, but also anywhere inside the mouth where they form as small and round lumps that are mixture of both yellow and red in colour – like a swelling.

It might be that you only have one mouth ulcer, the onset of which happens very quickly, or it is possible that you have more than one, with some people developing between 5 and 10 mouth ulcers at one time depending upon the severity of the condition and what the cause of the mouth ulcers developing might be.

Causes
Causes of mouth ulcers include:

An injury to the mouth

Changes in hormonal levels

Food allergies

Lack of iron

Lack of vitamins B12 and also Folic Acid

As a negative side effect of taking certain medication

Having a genetic predisposition to developing mouth ulcers. This is where there is a family history of mouth ulcers and so the propensity to developing them is passed down

Also, for some women mouth ulcers can develop as a result of the menopause.

Note: It is important to point out that mouth ulcers can sometimes simply develop in the mouth without there being any obvious or underlying cause.

Diagnosis
Most cases of mouth ulcers clear up of their own accord and without treatment over a few days (but only if you take care not to aggravate your condition by avoiding things such as salt, spicy foods and acidic drinks).

Mouthwashes and lozenges may ease your pain and can actually accelerate the healing process. However, where this proves unsuccessful in clearing up your symptoms, arrange an appointment with your GP.

Treatment
As we have seen, most mouth ulcers clear up after a week to ten days. However, in severe cases where treatment is necessary there is a range of treatment options available (which will be prescribed by your GP), such as:

A course of steroid tablets

Powerful steroid mouthwashes

Immunosuppressant drugs
