What is snoring?
Millions of people across the UK suffer as a result of snoring. This can be the person who snores, their partner, and/or even their neighbours. Also, in dormitory accommodation or hospital wards, a person snoring can keep the other people awake. This can lead to impatience, resentment and even confrontation.

Causes
Causes of snoring include:

Being overweight or obese

Smoking

Drinking alcohol to excess

Damage to the nose

Having a naturally crooked nose

Having a cold

Allergies

Nasal polyps

Sleeping on your back

Taking certain prescribed medication(s) and/or sleeping tablets

Having a low-set or thick palate

Having enlarged tonsils

As a natural part of the ageing process

Also, you may have a condition called sleep apnoea (obstructive). This is where your throat muscles relax while you are sleeping and obstruct the airflow through your nasal airways.

Diagnosis
If you snore and you are concerned about the impact your snoring is having on your relationship/quality of life, arrange to see your GP. After taking your medical history and asking you some questions about your snoring, an appropriate treatment will be recommended to you.

Treatment
Most people who snore find a marked improvement in their condition once they have made certain lifestyle changes, such as: losing weight, reducing their alcohol intake, not drinking alcohol late at night, inhaling steam (also using a humidifier), and also making changes to the way they sleep – adjusting the head of the bed to the raised position. Sleeping on your side can also make a huge difference and reduce snoring dramatically.

In severe cases of snoring, surgery to the nasal passages may be recommended.
