Where is The Indian 3g Smartphones Market Headed?

Despite a slow start, the Indian 3G smartphones market is headed to reach new heights by the end of 2015. At present the Indian cellular space is undergoing radical changes in technology, 3G is just one of the many changes, nevertheless the most important one, because, based on this, other changes are likely to come that will enhance the user experience.

Like all technological innovations, 3G smartphones also had its fair share of controversies and naysayers. Fortunately though, the technology has proved robust and too strong for its critics and it has managed to overcome steep roadblocks to become the new choice of telecommunications technology. Lets have a look at the roadblocks and how they were overcome.

Steep Roadblocks

Time and again it has been seen that change has always been vehemently opposed by people who like the old better and do not want anything that takes them beyond their comfort zone! 3G was no different. Besides this, there were some very real issues that left 3G with no takers.

First was the price. The Indian telecom industry invested a lot of money in establishing the infrastructure for 3G, which is why they had to keep the prices prohibitively high for them to recover initial costs. Even now, prices have not come within reach of the average mobile phone user. The Indian customer is very sensitive when it comes to costs and prices, thus they prefered 2G over 3G.

Second was the rarity of hardware that supported the technology. 3G mobile phones were many times costlier than 2G handsets. Moreover, there were very few brands that supported 3G. The market penetration was low and there were not many options to choose from. So, the transition was even harder to make.

Last but not the least, 3G smartphones were very power intensive and ate up battery resources very fast. This was not what the average customer in a developing country like India wanted. They were happy with their 2G mobiles that had bare minimum functions and could run for ages without a recharge.

How The Challenge Was Tackled

Internet access was the forte of 3G mobile phones and the champions who have turned the tide in favour of 3G mobiles used this fact to make 3G smartphones appealing. They understood that there was a need to educate the masses about the advantages of using a 3G smartphone to access their emails, social communities and other essential services on their mobile phones rather than on a desktop or laptop. 3G smartphones made use of the high speed networks to download internet content at blazing fast speeds and give users great streaming experience over 3G. 3G is also more secure than 2G. Internet users who accessed the internet over 2G networks were doing so in a very insecure environment. 3G made this much secure and eliminated all security loopholes thus making the experience much safer.

Finally, it would be unfair if we left out the most potent fact responsible for putting 3G smartphones into the pockets of an average mobile user - apps! Applications are standalone programs that make the user experience far better by allowing users to download free or paid applications over the internet and use them over a fast network.

3G smartphones are headed for great times ahead with some predictions which out the number at 370 million by 2017. We believe if data plans and calling plans are made affordable, 3G smartphones will become as common as 2G phones.
